Verification Data and Scheme
- Assessed for 25 North Atlantic landfalling tropical storms and hurricanes 2004-2008.

Verification performed against ground station reports of 3-sec maximum wind gusts listed in the NHC post-event tropical cyclone reports.

Verifying observations comprised 606 stations recording tropical storm strength only gusts, 133 stations recording hurricane Cat 1 only gusts, 41 stations recording hurricane Cat 2 only gusts, and 36 stations recording hurricane Cat 3 and above gusts.
- Accuracy metric used is the Mean +/- SD TSR Gust History Absolute Percentage Error. This is computed as a function of 3-sec maximum gust threshold.

The TSR gust history has a mean absolute percentage error (2004-2008) of just 15-18% for all gust thresholds between tropical storm strength and hurricane Cat 3 and above.
